The Racist History of the Death Penalty
2023
In partnership with Rehumanize International, I created a minute and a half video explaining the racist history of the death penalty. The ask was a social media slideshow with meaningful statistics that explain that the death penalty is not equally applied. The creative director specifically asked that we avoid statistics about innocence, because that’s been done so often, and that the org would like something that focuses on the inequity within the death penalty’s application.
I did research, and then crafted a script and a frame-by-frame animation that explained the modern death penalty’s connection to lynching. I chose the music and read the voiceover. The art style is inspired by Rehumanize’s branded colors, paper-style animation and hand-drawn illustrations. The video was posted during the week of the Starvin’ For Justice event in Washington D.C. to protest the death penalty, from June 29 – July 2.
